Work hard, play harder and sleep well | City Hub Rotterdam.
We always have dreamed of sleeping in one of those capsule hotels in Japan (and dreaming of traveling Japan of course). And City Hub brings that futuristic sleep experience one step closer to your doorstep. Not Japan, don’t get that wrong. We got the opportunity to visit the City Hub in Rotterdam. And it was more than we have expected.
Located right in the famous Witte de Withstraat, you will land yourself in the middle of the buzzing center where every kind of people collides. From students to the men in suits to the locals. But when stepping through the city hub door, you will find yourself in a different world. It’s a modern, digital Wes Anderson world. The lobby is warm, cozy; vintage meets modern Scandinavian design. When you enter, the local host will give you a warm welcome and if needed, will help you with the check-in. At the registration, you will get a wristband that is all you need during your stay. The rooms (hubs) are everything that we have expected but more! Unlike the capsules in Japan, the bed here are kingsize, and you have even space to leave your small luggage. They provide you with bathrobes and towels. And don’t worry about privacy, you have plenty!
Also if you want to get some work done, you can sit right up in bed and pull your laptop out. And with the City hub app, you can even toggle the lights to get you in the mood (yes, even romantic mood). If you prefer a table, you can go straight ahead to the lounge and make yourself comfortable. During the day it is relatively quiet, except for breakfast time (duh, we need to eat before work). If you want to have a coffee, tea or any other drink, you use your wristband to get access to the machines. But when it comes to food or if you want to have an alcoholic beverage with friends after 11 pm, we could recommend some places that are within walking distance of the City Hub. And these are a few of our favorites.
Hopper Coffee (Zwaanshals 474, 3035 KS Rotterdam)
If you are picky about your coffee (we are), you might want to grab your daily cup of fuel at Hopper Coffee. The owner might look like a grumpy, old man but he is dead serious about roasting his coffee. In 2016 they won the prize for the best coffee bar, and in our opinion, they are still the best.
Ballroom Bar Restaurant (Witte de Withstraat 88b, 3012 BT Rotterdam)
Just right across from the City Hub, there is Ballroom. If you are a great lover of Gin Tonics, then this your place to be. With 167 gin on the shelves, you can pick whatever your heart desires. Also, order their famous ball plates to snack on, Those gin tonics can hit you hard if you look away from them.
Wagamama (Witte de Withstraat 83-85, 3012 BN Rotterdam)
We can’t leave Wagamama out of this list. Since they are neighbors, you can smell the Asian flavors when you step out of the City Hub. They have an extended menu with hot bowls of ramen. If you are a ramen lover like us, you can eat your heart out. Although we also like the small plates to share. Since we love to share; if you show your wristband, you will get 20% off of your bill. That means, more drinks afterward!
